The SCAA Nominations Committee is seeking dedicated individuals to fill leadership positions in the Association. This is the perfect opportunity to give a little bit of your time back to SCAA and your fellow archivists, as well as gain valuable service experience for your vita. The Association relies on volunteers to arrange for quality professional development activities at an affordable price, to provide networking opportunities, to make available opportunities for sharing expertise and information via our blog and listserv, and to maintain a professional presence in the state.  

Nominations for officers are open for the following positions: 

 

•     Vice President/President-Elect - the Vice President shall perform the duties of the President in case of the President's resignation or absence. The Vice President shall serve as the President-Elect and as the official Association liaison with other organizations or committees with which the Association cooperates, and shall perform other duties as requested by the President.

 

•     First Year Director - Directors in their first year shall serve on the Program Committee and perform other duties as requested by the Executive Board or President. Directors (2nd year): Directors in their second year shall chair the Program Committee, coordinate arrangements for the annual meeting, and perform other duties as requested by the Executive Board or President.

 

•     Secretary - the Secretary shall record and disseminate the minutes of the Executive Board and business meetings as directed by the Board. The Secretary shall also maintain updated copies of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Association and provide copies upon request. The Secretary shall conduct the correspondence necessary to transacting the Association’s business. The Secretary shall also serve as the archivist for the Association.

Join the South Carolina Archival Association for its virtual Summer Social on food and beverage history in the Carolinas, Thursday, July 15th, from 3-5pm on Zoom.

 

Our three guest speakers are:

  • The Well Crafted NC team from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro on the craft brewing industry in North Carolina
  • T.J. Wallace from South Carolina Humanities on the travelling exhibit, “South Carolina: The Food We Celebrate”
  • David Shields, UofSC Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation, on the archival dimension of lost foods and recipes

 

We will have plenty of time for questions and socializing after the presentations. We have also created a living resource guide for archival materials, books, articles, living history farms, and other resources on South and North Carolina food and beverage history. Please join the South Carolina Archival Association for their annual Spring Workshop, hosted virtually via Zoom, on Friday April 30th, from 9:00am-12:00pm. Our presenters are Theresa J. (T. J.) Wallace (South Carolina Humanities), Brad Sauls (South Carolina Department of Archives and History), Amber Westbrook (South Carolina Arts Commission), and Dawn Mullin (South Carolina State Library). In this session, they will discuss processes and best practices on grant writing, and share their experiences in relation to grant writing, grant reviewing, and/or grant operations during the Covid-19 pandemic. This event is free to attend, but registration is required. More information is included below. This event will be recorded and shared after the event for those unable to join us.

 The results of Tests 7 and 8 have been released. Both tests measured attenuation of the COVID-19 virus on hardcover book covers (buckram cloth, stacked configuration), softcover book covers (coated paper, stacked configuration), Plastic protective covers(Biaxially oriented polyester film, stacked configuration) and Expanded polyethylene foam (1-inch, unstacked configuration) at temperatures both higher and lower than the ambient temperatures (68 to 75°F; 20 to 24°C) used in Tests 1-6. Test 7 was held at temperatures of 34 to 36°F (1 to 4°C) while Test 8 was held at temperatures of 83 to 84°F (28 to 29°C). Results showed that attenuation rates for materials held at the colder temperatures were significantly slower compared to the warmer and ambient temperatures.
